JOB
JOB SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the Director of Recreation Programming, the Recreation Specialist performs support work related to recreational programs, events, and sports leagues; may provide instruction and conduct classes/activities for scheduled activities, leagues, and events; and provides support to the Recreation Coordinators. May assist with the development, promotion, and implementation of all recreation programs. Work requires high degree of customer service and regular in-person, email, and phone communications with the public. Work is performed within defined guidelines and procedures and requires conflict resolution skills.
JOB FUNCTION
Essential Job Functions
Provides support for recreation programs, events, and sports leagues.
Assists in planning and coordinating specialized recreational activities in recreation programs, events, and sports leagues.
Assists in preparing marketing and publicity of recreational activities and programs; solicits active interest, participation, and support of community groups.
Records and maintains supply inventory and assists with purchasing supplies.
Collects feedback from participants, parents, and staff to improve programs offered.
Receives and responds to questions and concerns from patrons; identifies issues and resolves problems or refers to supervisor as appropriate.
Provides back-up support, including receiving and transferring incoming calls, assisting with program registration, and providing general assistance to the public as needed.
Maintains detailed records of work performed and program resources.
Sets up tables, equipment, and seating for programs, camps, and classes.
Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.

Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Required
Superior customer service skills.
Must have excellent time-management and organizational skills.
Ability to provide direction to event staff and volunteers and to communicate special recreation programs, events, and sports leagues logistics.
Ability to operate office equipment and computer programs. Specific skill in use of MS Office Suite, particularly: Word, Outlook, and Excel, and department-specific software.
Able to prioritize multiple projects.
Conflict resolution skills and knowledge of problem-solving techniques.
Ability to apply tact and good judgment.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, officials, co-workers, and volunteers.
Ability to present information in a group setting in an interactive manner.
Demonstrated skills using oral and written communication in the performance of duties, including internal and public presentations.
Preferred
Knowledge of marketing and promotion techniques.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION
Minimum
High school diploma or equivalent.
Two (2) years of relevant part-time recreation program experience, or related work experience.
Or any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the equivalent necessary for satisfactory job performance.
Legally authorized to work in the US.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION
Required
Obtain First Aid, AED, and CPR Certification within six (6) months of employment.
Possess and maintain a valid Idaho Driver’s License and proof of valid insurance.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to walk and kneel for extended periods of time.
Enough stamina to perform duties for at least four hours at a time.
Ability to see, with or without corrective lenses, well enough to read standard text.
Ability to hear, with or without hearing support devices, well enough to converse on the telephone.
Ability to speak well enough to verbally converse with others, especially on the telephone.
Sufficient manual dexterity to write and operate office machines.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is typically performed in both standard office and outdoor environments, with potential exposure to adverse weather conditions. Employee may have exposure to dust, pollen, traffic hazards, transmissible illness, or rude/irate customers.

WORK SCHEDULE
This job typically requires the employee to work weekdays (Monday – Friday).
This job requires the employee to occasionally work a varied schedule, including days, evenings, and weekends (Saturday and Sunday), and overtime hours.
The position schedule is subject to change at any time at the discretion of management.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
Local travel in a City vehicle is required.
